The aim of the programme is to prepare students to become independent registered dental hygienists who are competent professionals in allied health care. The graduated general dental hygienist accepts personal and professional accountability for his/her ethical behaviour and evidence- based actions in the dental hygiene profession.

Clinic = patient care in an internal educational clinic
In years 3 and 4, the programme is mirrored. E.g. in year 3, half of the total number of students starts does the work placement in the first semester, while the other half does a semester of study and clinic.
Minors
In the first or second semester of year 4, students are required to do a minor. Students can choose to a minor in the field of Dental Hygiene, e.g. Periodontics, or Dental Hygiene and Youth.
Excellent students have the option to do an honours minor Research Skills or may be selected to do a minor in Dentistry. This minor is a prerequisite for admittance to the Bachelor programme in Dentistry offered by the University of Groningen.
Students can also choose to do one of the other minors offered by the School of Health Care Studies, such as Healthy Ageing, the English-taught minor Global Health and Quantified Self, or the minor Entrepreneurship in Health Care. They can also choose to do a minor offered by one of the other schools of Hanze UAS or another UAS in the Netherlands.
Students have the option to study abroad or do a work placement abroad in year 3.
