Learning outcomes
1. Student can calculate normal forces using the finite element method;
2. Student can use elasticity theory to calculate strength and stiffness for a non-homogeneous section and also calculate the 2nd order distribution of forces;
3. Student can use plasticity theory to determine the external distribution of forces for bars and sheets;
4. Student can perform a structural verification calculation using a finite element software package.

Content
In Structural Design, a mix of applied mechanics, mathematics, calculation software and standards and loads are taught as a basis for the material-specific subjects. Applied mechanics is covered more in-depth and broadened, making a specific distinction between plasticity and elasticity theory.
