Learning outcomes
After the course the student is able to:
- List the four tissue types (epithelial, muscle, connective and nerve) and recognize them, and name various tissues in photos of histological preparations.
- Understand the diseased cell as a central problem within pathology and is able to explain pathological symptoms using this knowledge
- Explain mechanisms of reversible and irreversible cell damage and cell death and apply these to pathologies
- Clarify the development of tumors from a pathophysiological and immunological point of view
- Distinguish acute and chronic inflammatory responses and describe the mechanisms of inflammatory responses and primary and secondary wound healing
- Identify differences between leukemia and lymphoma and recognize and explain different disorders of white cells

Basic pathology is the topic of this module. To recognize the pathological changes in cells and tissues, you must first become familiar with the normal image. The recognition of healthy tissues (histology) is done by showing images of the four tissue types. After you are familiar with normal cells and tissues, we’ll see what happens in the cells if things don’t go well. The cell can become sick and eventually die from necrosis or apoptosis. These pathways are extensively covered in class. Next, how tumors arise, their nomenclature, the epidemiology of cancer and the role of the immune system in the fight against tumors is discussed. Lastly, the inflammatory process and the consequences thereof at the cell level are examined.
