Learning outcomes

You have an understanding of the curriculum of the study of medical diagnostics and on the professional duties of the medical analyst for the purpose of professional orientation.   

You have mastered the general laboratory skills of a medical analyst, including laboratory rules and safety, correctly setting up and using a microscope and drawing according to drawing rules with the aim of learning to work safely and responsibly and safely in the laboratory.   

You will name the structure and function of the various organ systems in mammals, correctly dissect the rat and point out organs to learn mammalian anatomy and physiology.   

You and a project group will present a self-test as an introduction to a diagnostic method, explaining how the self-test works and explaining the concepts of sensitivity and specificity.  

You will create, track and evaluate a realistic weekly schedule leading to timely completion of tasks and assignments to master study skills.

You are going to explore the profession of medical analyst and how it fits into the curriculum of the Biology and Medical Laboratory Research - Medical Diagnostics programme.  

You will delve into the work field of the medical analyst using various sources (e.g. the programme description, the curriculum overview, job banks, media articles, the internship/graduation archive, research publications, interviews with trainees/analysts and possibly your own sources).  

During the practicals, you will learn basic laboratory skills and safety aspects related to them.     

In addition, you will investigate the use and principle of a self-test within a group and present this via a multimedia product. You will study the theory of organ systems and present it to each other. To conclude, you will examine, name and draw the different organs and organ systems of an organism in the laboratory and during an excursion.  

Finally, you will reflect on the professional content by presenting your experiences together with fellow students at the end of the module.
