Learning outcomes
You name and describe the anatomy of physiology of the endocrine system and some important (reproductive) hormones in the human body.
You apply general knowledge of the principles of basic chemical technique chromatography in working out the determination of a hormone by HPLC.
You name and describe the principles of the basic immunological technique ELISA and apply this knowledge in the determination of a hormone by ELISA and analyse the experimental data by applying appropriate statistical methods.
You will analyse a health issue from the casuistry surrounding a patient and use data analysis of the HPLC and ELISA experiments to determine the clinical picture and individually describe these results and conclusions in a research report.
You visualise and present with a group of fellow students the outcomes of the research project from module 1.3.1 in the form of a poster with matching poster presentation and pitch.

Content
Hormones are signalling substances in the body. The endocrine system are the organs that make hormones. You will learn in this module which organs they are, and what the hormones made there do.
To understand how hormones are measured, and what that means, you will be given a case study. You will use different methods to measure hormones to solve your case. You perform an ELISA test individually during these practicals, which is assessed as a basic professional skill. You then analyse your results to determine the clinical picture associated with the case. You document this in a report.
In this module, you also complete the research project of modules 1.3.1 and 1.3.2 by presenting a poster on the project you did.
