Learning outcomes

You work safely in the laboratory using a clear instruction and your own work plan according to VMT rules to learn to work aseptically and grow and recognise microorganisms and report the experiments in the lab journal according to the applicable guidelines.

You give and receive peer feedback on the lab journal of the VMT practical according to the logbook instruction and apply it in your own lab journal on the E. coli growth curve.

You correctly apply the calculation rules for solving second-degree equations, linear equations, equations with roots, power functions and logarithms, for describing formulas and for differentiating functions on data obtained during the practical.

You read an English-language article on the microbiome according to the supplied instructions and present this article in a structured way to fellow students to delve into the basics of microbiology.

You reflect on your study choice and write a short reflection report on the first semester of your study according to the guidelines.

Content

During the module 'microbiome' you perform the VMT practical (3 practical days) and the E. coli practical (1 practical day). You conclude both practicals with a logbook. You discuss the VMT logs for feedback that you take into account in the concluding E. coli log.

You practise with a dataset for differentiation and create a growth curve based on the E. coli practical. Your mathematical skills are tested by means of a written test.

You read with a group (3-4 students) one (or more) self-selected English article(s) that you read according to the provided instructions. You present this article to your fellow students. You give your fellow students feedback on their presentation.
