Learning outcomes

You will name and describe the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system and understand the functioning of the metabolism of the biomolecules proteins, fats and carbohydrates as the basis of biochemistry and demonstrate this through a presentation including a photo/movie of a self-assembled biomolecule and its metabolism.

You delve further into the skills of a medical analyst by working with general laboratory skills (pipetting, weighing, use of glassware) to determine the influence of pH on digestion, applying basic chemical arithmetic and mathematics, including fractions, powers and logarithms.

You work safely in the laboratory by preparing a practical according to the applicable guidelines and correctly logging and processing results in the lab log according to the logbook instruction for research skills.

Content

In this module, you will study the metabolism of the three biomolecules based on the human digestive system. Through various assignments, you will learn the anatomy, physiology and histology of the digestive system and zoom in on the chemical aspects of the metabolism of the macromolecules. In the laboratory, you will learn basic skills such as choosing the right glassware, weighing accurately, pipetting and logging practical work in the logbook.

To conclude, you will take a digital test on metabolism. All assignments are included in your anatomy portfolio. You complete the laboratory skills with a practical test on pipetting and logging.
