Learning outcomes

This module has the following learning outcomes:

You perform a crossing experiment with model organisms and analyse the results using the knowledge from the discipline of Basic Genetics in a biological or medical laboratory;

You individually perform a PCR experiment based on acquired knowledge and skills and visualise them by gel electrophoresis in a biological or medical laboratory;

You demonstrate professional use of software packages and apply (bio)informatic analyses in a given case;

You identify and analyse social ethical issues, after which you present and discuss a chosen issue in a group setting;

You reflect on your own development and progress within the Biology and Medical Laboratory Research programme and orientate yourself towards professional practice by means of a field excursion.

Content

In this module, the student will apply the knowledge gained from basic genetics in practice. During the practicum, the student performs a crossing experiment with the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. In addition, the student performs an aptitude test which focuses on the PCR technique to link phenotype and genotype of the model organism. In addition to the aptitude test, there will also be a final assignment on computer skills and (bio)informatic analysis. Ethical social problems will be presented and discussed within a Forum discussion. This module focuses on the student's professional skills. Students will reflect on their own progress and orient to professional practice through a field trip at a fourth-year student's internship site. These skills will be presented and discussed in a final interview with the mentor.
