Learning outcomes

You assign the systematic name to simple alkanes, alkenes, carboxylic acids, alcohols, esters, ethers and amines and draw the correct structural formula from a given name.

You identify a nucleophile and an electrophile and explain the course of an electrophilic addition reaction and draw its mechanism.

You apply the acquired theoretical knowledge and translate it into an approach for simple organic synthesis with correct use of the reprocessing techniques provided.

You perform a simple organic synthesis in a safe and responsible way, work up the reaction mixture and apply relevant analytical techniques.

You will carry out a simple organic-chemical research project in a group (PI = Professional Identity) according to the scientific method, report on this according to the applicable guidelines, and give an attractive and structured presentation about this for fellow students and lecturers. (PV = personal skills)

You reflect on your study progress and study experience through a mentoring lesson and a personal mentoring interview. (PO = personal development)

Content

In this module, you will work on organic chemistry. You will learn the naming of organic molecules, type(s) of reactions and be introduced to reaction mechanisms. You will apply this acquired theoretical knowledge to a number of organic chemical reactions in the lab where you will reuse self-synthesised products from quarter 1 in a group project.
Practical work is assessed by logbooks, measurement reports, practical competences and a presentation. Theory is taught through instructional lectures and tested through a written exam. Mentoring activities focus on your personal development (PO) and developing your professional identity (PI).
