This is primarily a NYJ elective This class offers the skills and knowledge required to create an arrangement for various small to large jazz ensembles. Writing for strings is also explored. Many aspects of writing are reviewed such as the ranges and transpositions of instruments, writing for the rhythm section, score analysis, harmonic and melodic concepts, critical listening, form, orchestration, voice leading techniques and notational skills. The student is encouraged to explore their creativity in their own compositions as well. All pieces are played in class and feedback is given by the teacher, performer and students. Throughout the year there will be public performances featuring arrangements from the class. There will be a public performance at the end of each semester featuring arrangements from the class.
