Content

Students gain initial experiences in giving instrumental lessons by teaching each other. The module consists of 10 lessons of which the first lessons are dedicated to preparing and teaching of the lessons. The focus of these introducing lessons is on establishing the initial situation, goals, lesson planning and choosing a suitable repertoire for the lessons to a fellow student. The last 6 lessons are dedicated to supervising teaching. The lessons then take on the character of a workplace in which students can discuss cases from
their lessons by means of video material and they receive feedback from teachers and fellow students.

The weekly pedagogy classes focus on the topics: lesson planning, developmental psychology. Pedagogy classes deal with subjects from music pedagogy and psychology, focusing on giving instrumental / vocal music lessons. The lessons have the character of both seminars and a workplace in which collaborating students work out assignments and present them to each other. Teaching is offered to mixed groups consisting of students from both the classical and jazz departments and Dutch and non-Dutch speaking students. In the lessons we work with (literature) assignments and skills are trained. Study material should be read at home in preparation. A final assignment is given for the various themes. Assignments can be found on Blackboard and must also be handed in there. Classes are weekly one-hour meetings. In the lesson overview the lesson dates, the topics discussed and the related literature are indicated.

During the internship, the student provides instrumental lessons for a student. During the lessons, the student focuses on aspects of instrumental technique and methodology and on pedagogical aspects such as: lesson planning and developmental psychology against the background of learning processes. The aspects mentioned are applied in an internship. The internship is supervised from internship workshop (s) involving various peers. Students observe each other's lessons and are guided from the workshops in giving and receiving constructive feedback to each other and to their students.

Teaching methodology is given by instrument-specific teaching method teachers. The methodology lessons take place weekly and in principle last 50 minutes. During the lesson, the student agrees with the lecturer on methodology. Methodology is instrument-specific methodology, so classes are given to students with the same main subject or from the same instrument group. The following will in any case be discussed: the methodology of the technique; the methodology of learning to make music linked to it and the repertoire for the instrument. Where possible, students from the disciplines of classical and jazz are combined in a group for certain subjects. The group size can in principle vary from 1 to 8 students. The methodology of the technique, the treatment of the repertoire is concluded with a test. This test can consist of either: a written test, an oral test or a (number of) assignment (s). When the tests are passed, the subject method is completed and corresponding credits are awarded.
