Content
The Harmony and Counterpoint course focuses on learning to write, play and listen (analytically) to the principles of polyphonic Western tonal music from the 17th century onwards. The writing takes place in a four-part setting (SATB).
Core activities of the course are: writing, playing, listening.
In the lessons, attention is paid to the setting of chords, voice-leading principles, dissonance treatment, figuration, ornamental tones, coding systems (continuo notation, step numbering and chord symbols).
HML in year 2 focuses on diatonic and chromatic only aspects of harmony (intermediate dominants, alterations within stages (VI, IV and II), voice-leading chords such as O 6/5, 4/3.
