Learning outcomes

The craft: Musicians maintain a wide range of technical knowledge and skills, which enable them to function within a national as well as international professional context. 
Analytical ability: Musicians can analyse music, including cognitively. 
Methodical approach & effective action: Musicians are able to act methodically and professionally, can reflect on this, are independent, and capable of giving feedback with and to others. 

Content

The course CTS consists of the following components:
- history (general history, cultural history, and history of western music)
- music analysis (focused on the form, structure and texture of music)
- harmony (the way in which Western music uses polyphony omended)
As the name of the course indicates, it is about making connections; in all lessons music is played, which is alternately studied from historical, theoretical and analytical angles. Contents are actively processed, for example by means of listen, sing, play, recognize, compare, put into words and carry out assignments.

Within contextual studies, attention is paid to developing an investigative attitude. This is done by working on setting up research, formulating research questions, creating mind maps, using professional literature, scientific and academic sources such as databases, reference works, journals and the like. Examples are J-STOR, Oxford Music Online, Oxford Art Online, and the like.

Aspects of research are addressed in subjects and themes that are discussed in class, and when working on the personal contextual paper on a self-chosen topic that forms part of the completion each year.
