Learning outcomes

The student:
  • Analyzes a product to be designed for functional properties and translates these into desired material properties;
  • Selects the optimal composite material based on material properties through systematic material selection.
  • Selects and describes the optimal combination of production method and processing techniques for the product to be designed.
  • Calculates the strength and stiffness properties of the selected composites based on an analysis of the properties of the individual components.
  • Applies the appropriate failure mechanism to predict possible failure of the design.
  • Validates the strength and stiffness properties of a composite by realizing this product and testing it through some loading experiments.

Content

Each product is designed to fulfill one or more functions. A well-designed product has the right balance between form and material. The wishes regarding material properties are often contradictory. By cleverly combining two or more materials into one material, material properties can be obtained that meet these conflicting requirements. This group of materials is called composites.  This course focuses on creating insight into and applying these materials. For instance for wind turbine blades.
