Learning outcomes

This module has the following learning outcomes:

You assign the systematic name to simple alkanes, alkenes, carboxylic acids, alcohols, esters, ethers and amines and draw the correct structural formula from a provided name.

You identify a nucleophile and an electrophile and explain the course of an electrophile addition reaction and draw its mechanism.

You apply the acquired theoretical knowledge and translate it into an approach for simple organic synthesis with correct use of the reprocessing techniques provided.

You perform simple organic synthesis in a safe and responsible manner, work up the reaction mixture and apply relevant analytical techniques such as NMR & IR.

Content

In this module, you will work on organic chemistry. You will learn the naming of organic molecules, type(s) of reactions and be introduced to reaction mechanisms. You apply this acquired theoretical knowledge to a number of organic chemical reactions in the lab where you synthesise your own substances.
Practical work is assessed by logbooks, measurement reports and practical competences. Theory is taught through instructional lectures and tested through a written examination.
