Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes independent of learning pathway:
- The novice professional knows, identifies and works safely in accordance with professional standards, guidelines and protocols (applicable laws and regulations) concerning (high-risk and reserved) procedures aimed at patients whose lives are in danger and is able to deviate from these in a reasoned manner, if possible in consultation with the care recipient, in order to provide comprehensive care.
- The novice professional collects and analyses data in a systematic manner, such as the purpose, (contra)indications, complications, anatomy, physiology, psychology, pathology and pharmacology relating to the performance of high-risk and reserved procedures.
- The novice professional applies methods for risk assessment, problem recognition and intervention while performing nursing skills on patients in a life-threatening condition and is then able to report and transfer this information efficiently, effectively and methodically.
Indicators level 1:
Performs (reserved and high-risk) procedures aimed at patients in life-threatening situations in various settings, such as palliative care, first aid and intensive care, taking into account their own authority and competence.
- Works according to standards, guidelines and protocols (in accordance with legislation and regulations) aimed at patients whose lives are at risk, which are part of their functional responsibility, and is able to deviate from these responsibly if the wishes of the care recipient or their own professional or moral considerations give cause to do so
- Takes into account the wishes and needs of the vitally endangered care recipient in their actions, after consultation with the care recipient and their relatives about the care required
- Is familiar with the underlying basic principles of, among other things, anatomy, physiology, psychology, pathology and pharmacology as they relate to vitally endangered patients
- Identifies the purpose, (contra)indications and complications of the nursing procedures performed on the vitally endangered patient
- Applies methods for risk assessment, early detection, problem recognition, intervention and monitoring in the care of vitally endangered patients
- Can efficiently and effectively report, consult and transfer information regarding the critically ill patient
- Can provide feedback to fellow students on their actions and professional behaviour in relation to the care of critically ill patients
- Demonstrates an understanding of the consequences of their own actions in relation to the creation of unsafe situations in the care of critically ill patients
- Works in the care of critically ill patients in accordance with the guidelines of safety policy and infection prevention, privacy, ergonomics, economics and ecology
CanMeds role: Care provider, collaborative partner, reflective EBP professional, organiser
The learning outcomes contribute to the areas of expertise ‘Justifying care’ and ‘Working on health’.
Key concepts from the BN2020 training profile
- Clinical reasoning: The continuous, process-based collection and analysis of data aimed at identifying the questions and problems of the care recipient and selecting appropriate care outcomes and interventions.
- Care delivery: Providing integrated care by independently performing all nursing tasks (including reserved and high-risk tasks) in low-complexity care situations, in compliance with applicable laws and regulations and from a holistic perspective.
- Continuity of care: Sharing knowledge and information aimed at ensuring the uninterrupted involvement of the necessary care providers in the care process of the care recipient and their loved ones over time.
- Promoting expertise: Demonstrating active and critical behaviour in order to maintain and improve one's own nursing expertise and that of others, and actively contributing to the search for, development and sharing of new (forms of) knowledge.
- Promoting safety: Continuously and methodically contributing to promoting and safeguarding the safety of care recipients, their loved ones and employees.
Competence mastery level (CBN, 2022)
The first level involves a moderately complex context in which the focus is on the methodical application of knowledge and skills based on guidelines and protocols in varying but similar situations. The nature of the task is structured, with known methods being applied. There is a build-up of self-management, leading to partly guided, partly unguided supervision. Supervision is provided during preparation and implementation, with a focus on learning (strategic) planning, self-efficacy, motivation and reflection. Reflection on actions is aimed at knowledge and understanding, with a focus on innovation.
Content
As a nurse, you will receive broad training so that you can work in various fields, where you will play an important role in the integrated care of patients and their loved ones. Regardless of the setting in which you work, nursing procedures (including reserved and high-risk procedures) will be part of your work.
During this module, the emphasis is on learning and mastering various nursing skills from a holistic, reflective, care recipient-oriented basic attitude with a theoretical foundation. You will learn to work according to protocols, guidelines and standards and to deviate from them in a reasoned manner. In a moderately complex simulated setting, you will learn to perform skills, give and receive feedback, and communicate with care recipients based on various case studies, in collaboration with fellow students. You will use various working methods, such as e-learning, instruction lessons, and scenario training.
Assessment:
Within this module, you will work on achieving the learning outcomes by submitting various pieces of evidence at an individual level. In this way, you will demonstrate that you have mastered the learning outcomes. During the skills lab, you will receive feedback on the nursing skills you have performed from both the instructor and your fellow students at various times. These moments include practising with fellow students, scenario training and proficiency tests. The feedback will give you insight into your own learning process and you will know what steps you still need to take to ultimately achieve the learning outcomes. At the end of the module, you will receive a final assessment based on the evidence you submit, which will provide insight into your development.
