Learning outcomes
The student:
- Designs a drive so that the correct displacements (rotation and translation) of moving parts can only occur in the desired directions.
- Selects machine parts (such as bearings and gears) for a designed driven device, based on a set of requirements.
- Selects a PMDC motor for a given application based on required power, and spatial dimensions.
- Calculates a gear ratio to match the load and motor curves and selects a commercially available gear that achieves this.
Content
Within the module Components and Transmissions, students learn how to select and dimension machine parts based on a load and drive (electric motors). They can apply this knowledge in the design and engineering phase of their project. In this project, they design a robot based on this knowledge, in which various components and transmissions will be incorporated.
