Learning outcomes
The student:
- Apply Scan-to-CAD techniques to accurately digitize existing building components and residential structures.
- Create and modify 3D CAD models of homes using SOLIDWORKS with a focus on sustainable energy optimization.
- Use SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation (with HVAC module) to simulate and analyze airflow and thermal behavior in residential environments.
- Identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency in buildings through CAD-based simulations, including: Enhancing insulation performance, optimizing natural and mechanical ventilation, minimizing thermal bridges and heat loss
- Interpret simulation results to propose practical energy-saving design modifications.
- Communicate technical findings and design decisions related to building energy performance using clear and structured CAD documentation.
Content
In this project, Scan to CAD techniques can be used to make homes more energy-efficient, the central theme of semester 2. By drawing or scanning existing homes or parts, they can be optimized using CAD software. The SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation module, expanded with the HVAC functionality, offers valuable support in this. This allows air flows and thermal performance in homes to be analyzed and improved, such as:
- Optimizing insulation.
- Improving ventilation.
- Reducing heat loss.
