Learning outcomes

You identify and describe the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system and a number of important (reproductive) hormones in the human body.

You will apply general knowledge of the principles of the basic chemical technique of chromatography in developing a method for the determination of a hormone using HPLC.

You will identify and describe the principles of a clinical chemistry assay, which you will carry out individually during the practical session, and you will analyse the experimental data by applying the appropriate statistical methods.

You analyse a health issue based on a patient case study and use general knowledge of immunological and basic chemical techniques to interpret data in order to determine the clinical picture; you then describe these results and conclusions individually in a case report.

Together with a group of fellow students, you will visualise and present the findings of the research project from module 1.3.1 in the form of a poster, accompanied by a poster presentation and pitch.

Content

The endocrine system consists of the organs that produce hormones. Hormones are signalling substances in the body. In this module, you will learn which organs form part of the endocrine system and what the hormones produced there do. At the end of the module, you will take a digital test on the endocrine system and hormones.

To understand how hormones are measured and what this means, you will be given a case study. You will be provided with various results from clinical chemistry tests to help you resolve your case study. You will analyse these results to determine which clinical picture corresponds to the case study. You will record your findings in an individual case report. In addition, during the practical session, you will individually carry out a clinical chemistry test, which will be assessed as a basic professional competence (BBC).

In this module, you will also complete the research project from modules 1.3.1 and 1.3.2 by presenting a poster on the project you have undertaken.
