Learning outcomes

  • You will name and describe the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system and understand the functioning of the metabolism of the biomolecules proteins, fats and carbohydrates as the basis of biochemistry and demonstrate this through a presentation including a photo/movie of a self-assembled biomolecule and its metabolism.
  • You delve further into the skills of a medical analyst by working with general laboratory skills (pipetting, weighing, use of glassware) to determine the influence of pH on digestion, applying basic chemical arithmetic and mathematics, including fractions, powers and logarithms.
  • You work safely in the laboratory by preparing a practical according to the applicable guidelines and correctly logging and processing results in the lab journal according to the logbook instruction for research skills.
  • You reflect on your study choice.

Content

In this module, you will study the metabolism of the three biomolecules – fats, proteins and carbohydrates – using the human digestive system as a model. Through a range of assignments, you will learn about the anatomy, physiology and histology of the digestive system and examine the chemical aspects of the metabolism of these biomolecules in detail. In the laboratory, you will learn basic skills such as selecting the correct glassware, weighing accurately, pipetting and recording your practical work in the logbook.

To conclude, you will sit a digital test on the metabolism of nutrients in the human body. You will incorporate all assignments into your anatomy portfolio.

You will complete the laboratory skills module with a practical test on pipetting and recording. Using the ‘start thermometer’, you will reflect on your choice of study programme and discuss this with your mentor.
