Learning outcomes
The Separation Technology 2 module covers the following components of the BOKS Chemical Technology curriculum:
Knowledge:
- Unit operations: separation techniques: Drying and Extraction
Skills:
- Experimenting with pilot-scale separation techniques
- Working safely in laboratory and industrial environments
- Research skills and systematic problem-solving
This module has the following learning outcomes:
- You describe the extraction process mathematically and graphically for single-stage, cross-flow and counter-flow extraction.
- You calculate and/or determine relevant physical properties of air from the psychrometric chart.
- You describe the drying process mathematically for drying under constant drying conditions.
- You will conduct a semi-technical scale experiment using a bench-scale cooling tower and use a mass-energy balance and the psychrometric chart to describe the experimental results.
- You will conduct a semi-technical scale drying experiment using a bench-scale dryer and use the results to describe and predict the drying process.
The aim of the module is to develop competence in the field of separation technology. The module forms part of the Separation Technology learning pathway, alongside the modules Process Simulation and Modelling 1 & 2 and Separation Technology 1.
