During the placement period, the student will further develop the knowledge, skills and competences required for the professional workplace. In consultation with the professional sector, the department has drawn up a competence-based profile for the Bachelor of Applied Science.

The competencies and the levels at which the student is assessed are:

Experimentation (E; 2): The student selects a protocol/approach, adapts it where necessary, carries it out and obtains reproducible and reliable results.

Development (Ow: 2): The student develops or improves by selecting or adapting an approach.

Management (B: 1): The student acts within the given frameworks and procedures described in relevant management systems.

Advising (A: 1): The student examines the client’s problems and/or requirements in depth. Contributes to a recommendation in accordance with a prescribed methodology.

Instructing (I: 1): The student, under supervision, passes on knowledge and skills to colleagues.

Project-based working (P: 1): The student works on a project within a defined project framework.

Self-management (Z: 2): The student reflects on their own performance and development.

The above competencies have different levels, which can be described using the following keywords as a measure of behaviour:

Level 1: executing, on instruction

Level 2: solving, analysing

Level 3: integrating, developing, transferring knowledge and skills

(applying knowledge and skills in new situations)

Level 4: generating knowledge

For each competence, the level that must be met at that point in time is indicated.

  • The work placement has several objectives:
  • The work placement serves as an introduction to your future professional environment. The focus during the placement period is on orientation: you need to gain an understanding of the purpose and functioning of the various departments within the organisation. It is also instructive during this placement to experience what it means to work routinely and on a regular basis.
  • Learning and applying the required professional attitude, job-specific skills and knowledge in preparation for working in the professional field.
  • Acquiring competencies at the appropriate level.

Content

To prepare students for professional practice, the programme includes a work placement period. The aim of this work placement is to prepare students for the professional environment. The focus of the work placement is on learning to function in the professional field by carrying out a work placement assignment or assignments. Students carry out an internship assignment at an organisation offering placements, such as a company, institution or research institute. In the curriculum, the internship period covers terms 1 and 2 of the third year of study. The internship carries a weighting of 30 ECTS credits in the curriculum.

For information about the placement, the Brightspace course ‘Placement and Graduation’ is available. OnStage is used as a monitoring and administration system. The link to OnStage can be found here: https://OnStage.xebic.com.

The 20-week internship period is structured as follows: weeks 1–4, drafting and discussing the Action Plan. Weeks 8–9, an interim evaluation is scheduled with the student, company supervisor and contact lecturer. Weeks 18–20: completion of the portfolio, including a written report and poster presentation.

The placement period is assessed against the competences and levels as described for the Chemical Technology programme. Students must demonstrate that they meet these competences by submitting a portfolio comprising set and optional components and by giving a poster presentation. During the placement period, a feedback session is organised to help students get started with their portfolio.
