Medical expertise
LU
Medical Expert
Learning Outcome (final level):
The Physician Assistant can, based on both generalist and specialist medical knowledge, skills, and insights, carry out the medical diagnostic and treatment process in both routine and complex, specialized care situations.
Level 1
The student Physician Assistant can inventory single and composite patient problems, with an emphasis on systematically acquiring activating data obtained from anamnesis, physical examination, and additional diagnostics to arrive at a diagnosis and corresponding treatment and policy.
Communication
Learning Outcome (final level):
The Physician Assistant (PA) communicates effectively and empathetically with patients, relatives, and (healthcare) professionals. The PA collects, organizes, and shares relevant information, involves patients in treatment plans, and adapts communication to the situation. The PA carefully documents decision-making, considering patient safety and privacy.
Level 1
The student Physician Assistant (PA) maintains an empathetic and trusted therapeutic relationship, shares appropriate information about research and aftercare, communicates under the supervision of the practitioner, and collects relevant biopsychosocial and medical information about the request for help.
Scientific Thinking
Learning Outcome (final level):
The Physician Assistant analyzes complex issues, critically assesses existing evidence, and conducts scientific research to implement substantiated improvements in healthcare.
Level 1
The student Physician Assistant applies the principles of EBP (Evidence-Based Practice) when assessing scientific literature to translate a professional practice issue into a relevant research question with an appropriate methodology.
Professionalism
Learning Outcome:
The PA acts independently, professionally, and ethically according to professional standards and regulations, is open to evaluation, and integrates feedback into their actions. In this way, the PA contributes to the application, development, and improvement of professional standards within healthcare.
Level 1
The student Physician Assistant (PA) develops as a beginning professional by acting independently, professionally, and ethically according to professional standards and regulations. The PA is open to evaluation and integrates feedback into their actions and functioning.

Content
This course centers on common dermatological, ENT (ear, nose, and throat), and ophthalmological patient problems. These clinical issues serve as the foundation for developing medical diagnostic skills and understanding the (pharmaco)therapeutic process. Through lectures, practical sessions, and small-group discussions, students learn clinical reasoning and decision-making, with a focus on both curative and preventive aspects—including the ability to logically construct and carry out a (pharmacotherapeutic) treatment plan.
The actions of the Physician Assistant (PA) should preferably be evidence-based, meaning they are informed by findings from scientific research. Therefore, students must learn to evaluate the quality, outcome, and relevance of research findings and conclusions. At the end of the first academic year, students write a research proposal that serves as a go/no-go moment for conducting practice-oriented research.
As part of the Communication & Professional Development module, students work on competencies such as communication, collaboration, and (professional) personal leadership.
Additionally, there is emphasis on efficient, structured (medical) consultations, communicative skills, and reflection on one’s own (professional) actions.
Want me to adapt it for a syllabus, university website, or promotional brochure? I can sharpen the tone and flow to fit any format you’d like.
