Inhoud

The primary aim of the performance course is finding your own artistic voice. This is done through supporting the development of your Professional Practice from the technical, creative, and artistic perspective, as well as the perspective of engagement.

You will receive coaching on your main instrument. The performance course uses an innovative approach designed to create flexible and professional musicians, who are able to connect their practice to changing environments.

All Master students will also participate with their colleagues from other strands in making a cross genre and cross discipline performance called Project Artistic Synthesis, in which the different musical approaches come together. This project will take place during the first and second semester. In this joint project each strand represents its unique focus and qualities at a high level, through which the students will have the opportunity to share their own expertise and experience with the others. This will lead to innovative cross- pollination and peer learning experiences. Highly skilled instrumentalists and interdisciplinary makers will coach the student groups in the development of their artistic projects. The first semester focusses on input towards developing co-creative skills and ideas through workshops and group sessions.

For classical (CLA) students, next to the individual instrumental lessons, students have additional time to be used for activities that are directly related to their main subject/performance lessons. Group lessons take place that are individually tailored to specific instrumental studies. Each semester Chamber Music/Ensemble lessons are also available with an ensemble that the students will put together themselves.

New York Jazz (NYJ) students, will work within the lab band where they connect their research to their playing together with fellow students. In the first semester this can help to identify and reflect on their research topic. In the master ensemble they will co-work with their fellow students on a context-based project outside of school. There are several master classes and group lessons in the NY comes to Groningen programme.

New Audiences and Innovative Practice (NAIP) students participate in the core modules Leading and Guiding, Performance and Communication and Creative Ensemble. These modules will form the foundation for them to develop the performance skills required to situate their musicianship within a fluid societal context. This is done through context-based learning in a socially engaged project with a focus on collaborative making.

There are several electives from which students can choose based on their needs and study plan.
