At the end of the course the students will be able to implement many of the discussed techniques in their own work.
This includes among others: melodic development using motive inversions, three part harmony, pivot transpositions, modes, tone rows, ostinatos, interval cycles, phase shifting, cut & paste technique, mosaic approach, brutal harmony.

Inhoud
In this course we will explore the specific composition techniques of influential jazz-composers such as Dave Brubeck, Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter and Lennie Tristano. We will also look into the approach of contemporary classical composers like Stravinsky, Messiaen, Reich and Glass and their influence on (jazz) composers of the present day. The teacher will share relevant examples of his own work on every subject.
