At the end of the course, you will have dived into the aesthetic of the baroque world. You will have roughly seen how the concept of Musica Poetica influenced Bach and his predecessors and contemporaries. You can place a Bach piece of your choice into a historical context, giving you a more complete view. And you will have dived into one of musical history’s diverse, complex, and intriguing composers.

Johann Sebastian Bach's music often arouses astonishment and amazement. To many listeners and musicians alike, it seems to have fallen out of the sky—for some, even from heaven. But has it really?
This course will discuss Johann Sebastian's position from a broader perspective. In which tradition did Bach fall? Which German, Italian, and even Dutch composers influenced this landmark in music history? How, in turn, and by whom were they themselves influenced? How did Bach become inspired by his direct surroundings? In which regard did his family and contemporaries have an impact on him, and in what respect?
