Leeruitkomsten

- Students are able to write legible and playable lead sheets of jazz songs that they need to transcribe by ear, partly during the lessons, partly at home.
- They are able to make harmonic and melodic reduction so that only the head-melody and chords are written out (without embellishments).
- Students are able to produce correct and legible transcriptions of selected jazz improvisations, played and recorded by jazz masters.
- Students are able to point to improvisational concepts that are used in these solos.
- They are able to present their research-findings in a short presentation to their peers, play the solo they researched and they can substantiate their conclusions / findings.

Inhoud

Part 1: “Overview”.
Several solfege topics are covered as well as reduction for lead sheets. In class we work on a number of tunes. Then, we cover the complete songs, so including intros and outtros. The Midterm Exam consists of a partly finished lead sheet containing errors that students need to finish/correct. Several audio fragments are played that students need to transcribe in class without instrument.

Part 2: “Licks, Phrases and Improvisational Concepts”.
We look at different licks and phrases used in improvisations, which we transcribe and analyse. They need to give a short presentation of 4 of their favourite improvisational concepts with examples. We then look at the whole of an improvisation during listening and transcription sessions. For the Final Exam students need to present before class a complete solo transcription and analysis for improvisational concepts. They also play the solo on their instrument, by heart.
