Learning outcomes
This module has the following learning outcomes within a biological or medical laboratory
You describe the operation of an agarose gel electrophoresis, visualise DNA by agarose gel electrophoresis and report this in writing in a logbook according to indicated guidelines;
You describe the principle of a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), perform a basic PCR reaction, interpret the PCR result and report this in writing in a logbook according to indicated guidelines;
You describe the principle of genetic regulation in bacteria, visualise it using spectroscopy and SDS-PAGE, and analyse, interpret and combine the results;
You describe the principle of plasmid DNA isolation, apply this by isolating a plasmid from a bacterium, analyse the plasmid by restriction analysis and report this in writing in a logbook according to indicated guidelines;
You collaborate in groups on assignments on macromolecules (fats, sugars), communicate and present your results to the group and report this via a digital portfolio according to indicated guidelines.

Content
In this module, students will be introduced to various molecular techniques within the field of Molecular Biology. The knowledge from the module "The Central Dogma" (offered in parallel) will be applied in different research questions within the practical part of this module. During the practical, various techniques will be introduced, including Polymerase Chain Reaction, restriction analysis, agarose gel electrophoresis and SDS-PAGE.
In addition, students will work in study teams on assignments on macromolecules (fats and sugars) to get a good overview of all biological macromolecules.
