Learning outcomes

You will set up a clinical chemistry laboratory as part of a team, including establishing a LIMS system, division of tasks and roles, call protocol and SOPs to receive, record, process, analyze and report patient samples, taking into account (data) safety, privacy, efficiency, reliability and reproducibility of results.

You will perform a variety of key clinical chemistry analytical methods, such as ELISA, HPLC and enzyme kinetics assay, applying a structured experimental approach in each case to achieve reliable analysis of results, and elaborate these results in a logbook and measurement letters.

You analyze blood components by manual and automated diffen, compare both these methods in a validation report, and diagnose both white and red blood cell abnormalities by describing and analyzing unknown (abnormal) blood images.

Content

During the labs, you work partly on “regular” labs to learn important molecular biological and chemical techniques associated with clinical chemistry and hematology. At the same time, you also prepare as a team for the shop floor simulation that takes place later in the year. Here you will learn more about the logistics and working methods in laboratory medicine and get acquainted with the handling of patient data and patient material taking into account the ethical aspects involved such as safety and privacy. You will also learn important aspects of quality assurance and the application of quality controls.

You will also create in this module some typical professional products from Medical Diagnostics, such as an SOP and a validation report.
