Learning outcomes

You will analyze, evaluate and determine microorganisms in microbiological samples by using selective media, biochemical and molecular techniques and various coloring techniques for the purpose of microbiological laboratory skills, and explain the elaboration of the determination in an oral log review.

You will isolate bacterial and viral DNA/RNA from various sources, detecting specific viruses and bacteria using various PCR techniques as an example of virus and bacteria detection within medical microbiology.

You perform antibiotic susceptibility testing, including the MIC assay and disk-diffusion antibiogram, and interpret the results to determine antibiotic resistance (profiles) of microorganisms representative of clinical samples.

You elaborate data from a MALDI-TOF within the context of a provided case and present the elaborated data to your fellow students and actively participate during the presentations of others by asking questions.

Content

During practicum days, you will work on the determination of microorganisms in a clinical sample using various tests. You grow microorganisms on selective media and get to work with biochemical tests and different staining methods. You also determine the antibiotic susceptibility of these microorganisms. You discuss the results of the determination orally in a logbook review. In addition, you look at the presence of bacterial and viral DNA from different sources, and learn to apply different PCR techniques for detection. You will work out data from a MALDI-TOF experiment and present this case study to your fellow students.
