Learning outcomes

- You name and describe the anatomy of physiology of the endocrine system and some important (reproductive) hormones in the human body.
- You apply general knowledge of the principles of basic chemical chromatography in working out the determination of a hormone by HPLC.
- You name and describe the principles of a clinical chemical determination, which you perform individually during the practical, and you analyse the experimental data by applying appropriate statistical methods.
- You analyse a health issue from case histories surrounding a patient and use general knowledge of immunological and basic chemical techniques to interpret data to determine the clinical picture and you describe these results and conclusions individually in a research report.
- With a group of fellow students, you visualise and present the outcomes of the research project from module 1.3.1 in the form of a poster with accompanying poster presentation and pitch.

Content

Hormones are signalling substances in the body. The endocrine system are the organs that make hormones. You will learn in this module which organs they are, and what the hormones made there do.
To understand how hormones are measured, and what that means, you will be given a case study. You will be given different results of clinical chemical determinations during the practicals to solve your case. You analyse these results to determine the clinical picture associated with the case. You record this in a report.
In addition, during the practicum you individually perform a clinical chemistry determination, which is assessed as a basic professional skill.
In this module, you also complete the research project of modules 1.3.1 and 1.3.2 by presenting a poster on the project you did.
