Learning outcomes

  • You explain the concepts of polarity and mol and apply them in simple chemical calculations, enabling you to apply basic chemistry and chemical arithmetic/mathematics knowledge to general laboratory skills.
  • You name the different parts of a microscope and explain their function, and you build up routine in microscopy by using the main microscopic techniques to study tissues. In the process, you delve into the functioning of different types of tissues.
  • You know and recognise the structure and appearance of the four tissue types (epithelium, muscle, connective and nerve) and colour a tissue section and give the correct designation(s) of the tissue as the basis of histology.
  • You name and describe the anatomy and physiology of the skin and musculoskeletal system and delve into various pathological conditions.
  • You will make overview and detail drawings of histological preparations of various tissues and organs according to drawing rules and display them in an ordered portfolio to correctly process microscopic images.

Content

During this module, you will study the structure of different animal tissues based on theory and histological preparations on the practical course. During the lectures, you will complete in-depth assignments on the various tissues, the skin and the locomotor system.
In addition, during histology tutorials, under the supervision of a lecturer, you work out the practicals in a portfolio and have your work assessed and interpreted by a fellow student.

In this module, you also work with chemical calculations. You will practise the calculations during working lectures, followed by practice games of chemical calculation in teams.

Basic maths skills will also be covered in a working lecture during this module, which will also involve practice. At the end of the quarter, chemical arithmetic and basic mathematics will be tested individually in writing.
