Content
To provide the best possible care, it is important that physiotherapists keep their knowledge up to date and are able to substantiate their treatments. Physiotherapists must demonstrate to both clients and health insurers that their physiotherapeutic interventions are scientifically well-founded. Being able to interpret and critically assess the scientific value of research and literature is therefore an essential skill.
In O&I 3, students will work in a ‘journal club’ during the first few weeks to gain insight into the differences between qualitative and quantitative research and to develop a deeper understanding of the reliability of quantitative research and statistical testing. After that, students are introduced to conducting research using both quantitative and qualitative research designs. Each student, in collaboration with fellow students and under the supervision of their tutor, will design and conduct both a quantitative and a qualitative study. For the quantitative study, they will formulate a research question, select an appropriate method and statistical test, and carry out data collection and analysis. For the qualitative study, students will also formulate a research question, and each student will conduct at least two in-depth interviews, transcribe and code these interviews. Students will learn how to process and interpret the collected data and draw appropriate conclusions. The results will be presented in a research article (for the quantitative study) and in an oral presentation (for the qualitative study).
During sessions with the supervising lecturer, the progress of the research is discussed and there is room for (peer) feedback on intermediate products. In addition, supporting education is offered, such as an SPSS practical and a scientific presentation lesson.
This module builds on the O&I modules from years 1 and 2 and prepares the student for the final research project. After completing this module, the student will have acquired knowledge, understanding, and experience with both qualitative and quantitative research
