Learning outcomes
- You demonstrate, through completed assignments, that you apply knowledge of the main theories in the science of psychology to everyday situations in your life. These completed assignments come together in a portfolio. The content of this portfolio is formatively reviewed by fellow students throughout the module and discussed during the seminars, and at the end of the module, a summative assessment of the complete portfolio is conducted by the instructor.
- You creatively present a number of psychological theories from the course material to your fellow students, showing that you understand how psychological theories can be applied in practice.
Content
Why do humans behave like they do? The module "Introduction to Psychology" aims to test your beliefs about human behavior against scientific insights based on theoretical explanations and empirical research. Ideas that are based on common sense or personal life experiences about behavior and psychological processes sometimes withstand, but often do not withstand, the test of scientific experimentation. At the same time, science cannot function without the use of common sense. It is often a source of inspiration for theory development and scientific research.
In this educational program, we will discuss a variety of psychological concepts and themes. We invite you to compare your own ideas with both older and more recent scientific insights. For each new topic, you will start by asking yourself what your common sense tells you, and what your intuition and personal experience suggest. Then, you will study the relevant topic in the textbook. Do you need to adjust your insights? Are your ideas confirmed? Do you discover important insights about the how, why, and purpose of our behaviors? What concepts or theories are behind these? What new questions arise?
In this way, using the textbook and your own knowledge and experience, you will conduct research. By the end of your investigation, you may have gained new insights and discarded old ideas that, upon further reflection, were incorrect or unhelpful. You will have learned psychological insights and concepts, and taken a step forward in developing a scientific professional attitude characterized by curiosity and critical (self-)examination.
