Learning outcomes
- You explain the functioning and applicability of molecular spectrometry, mass spectrometry, and protein analysis using literature.
You read, understand and discuss scientific papers of new and state-of-the-art techniques in the biomolecular field.
You write reviews about suggested literature and present a scientific paper in a poster as a group effort.
You are able to understand and describe the medicinal activity of a drug on basis of its chemical structure.
Content
The course Advanced Analysis of Biomolecules will use 10 lessons of 1,5 hours to get you acquainted with advanced techniques of the field of protein analysis and proteomics. This will take place by three sets of lectures each accompanied by a guest lecture by an expert in the field, presenting a recent research article or a specialistic topic. You will prepare for the visits of the guest lecturer by participating in discussions in Perusal and/or attending the introduction lectures. You will participate actively in the guest lectures and will demonstrate this by handing in the questions they asked accompanied by the answer of the guest lecturer. You will write a review about one of the articles discussed and take a written exam for another. After these three lecture sets, you will demonstrate the acquired knowledge by the presentation of a poster about an article that describes research in which contemporary protein analysis techniques are used. Posters of peers will be feedbacked by all the students before printing. Your end grade is based on the tasks that are handed in (Perusal discussion, review, test and questions and answers of the expert lectures) and the poster presentation.
The course Medicinal Chemistry comprises 6 lectures of 1,5 hours to get you acquainted with how the chemical structure of a drug (medicine) determines its medicinal activity in the human body. During the lectures theoretical information will be presented in combination with assignments & exercises. The end grade for this part of the course is determined with a written exam.
